After some eight years, in early November 2009, the century old cross was reinstated above the Bellcote – the Bell Tower of St Martin’s, together with some very fine oak carvings around its base. It was removed in 2001 for safety reasons.
Twelve months ago it was noticed that some of the Bell Tower ornate, ageing woodwork was rotten and in need of replacement. Under the guidance of the Church’s Project Manager – Dave Hall; and the Architect, Nick Joyce, a specialist Gloucestershire based firm of woodworkers – FJS Joinery, skilfully fashioned new oak carvings, using the templates of the original design. The old cross was also refurbished, set on a 12 foot steel pole to be attached to the loft of St Martins. The heavy structure was gently raised using a "block and tackle" pulley system to the Church’s roof, then firmly secured in place – to remain for at least the next 100 years.
It was a project costing £20.000, financed through St Martin’s capital building fund and with a grant of £2,000 from the Worcestershire and Dudley Historic Churches Trust. Worshippers at St Martin’s have commented that they are delighted to see the Bell Tower restored its former glory - it looks magnificent marking the church’s Centenary Celebration,
