The eminent author, scientist and theologian from Cambridge came to St Martin's on 6th July. The Reverend Dr John Polkinghorne, KBE, gave a fascinating talk about Science and Religion the last in the series of Centenary Lectures. He answered numerous questions and responded to comments.
The curate of St Martin’s and co-organiser of the series, the Revd Phil Bradford, said,
“It was a great privilege to be able to welcome this eminent author to St Martin’s Church. His experience as a former professor of mathematical physics at the University of Cambridge, and as an Anglican priest, makes him one of the most respected authorities on the relationship between religion and science.”
Dr Polkinghorne was appointed Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge from 1968 until 1979, when he resigned his chair in order to study for the Anglican priesthood. He was knighted in 1997 and has worked for the BMA’s Medical Ethics Committee and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, as well as chairing the Church of England’s Science, Medicine and Technology Committee (part of the Board of Social Responsibility). As a well respected author, much of his writing has focussed on the relationship between science and religion, drawing on his experience in both fields, and in 2002 he was awarded the Templeton Prize.
