The Bishop of Worcester, the Right Rev Dr John Inge, dedicated the church’s new lighting system and new glass doors during a special service of Choral Evensong held on Sunday 5th July 2015.
At the commencement of the service, Bishop John blessed the glass doors in the South Porch. The choir and clergy then processed into the church and Bishop John blessed the new lighting system.
In his sermon he said it was fortuitous that both projects had been completed together, as people can now look through the glass doors and see the new well lit interior. He pointed out that St Martin’s Church is a hub of activity in the local community and this wonderful new lighting scheme will enhance the many activities that take place in St Martin’s, all to the glory of God. He said “It is my hope that more and more people who pass on the London Road will look through the glass doors and catch a glimpse of heaven.”
St Martin’s is very grateful to all who contributed to the new lighting which by unanimous acclaim is a great success.
The South Porch doors on the London Road side of the church have a glass etching design by the much-respected local artist Sara Hayward. The inscription says “I was a stranger and you made me welcome” a quote from the words of Jesus in St Matthew’s Gospel. The Rector, Ken Boyce says “The new glass doors have made an important connection with passers-by. By keeping open the inner doors of the south porch into the nave of the church there is a view from the London Road right into the heart of the church. The south porch has become literally a window onto what we are here for.”
